In recent decades, hostage-taking has proven to be a particularly effective tactic for Islamic terrorist organizations around the world, including Al Qaeda. The global jihad movement sees citizens of foreign (mainly Western) countries as main targets for kidnapping, although in fact the local residents constituted the majority of kidnapping victims.

This book analyzes the hijacking of Islamic terrorism in the last 30 years in the Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen and Saudi Arabia), Asia (Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and the Philippines), Africa (the Maghreb, the Sahel and Somalia), and Russia as part of the Russian conflict -Chechen. The discussion also focuses on the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah, the Second Lebanon War of 2006, the terrorist attack in Mumbai (2008), the Chechen hostage crisis in Moscow and Selan (2002 and 2004), the kidnapping of the workers of the Algerian gas facility, In Amanas , by the Al Qaeda affiliate in the Maghreb in January 2013 and the "Westgate Mall" hostage crisis in Nairobi in September 2013.

Iran's role as a state sponsor of terrorism, and its sponsorship of terrorist organizations that use kidnapping tactics to advance Iranian interests in Lebanon and Iraq are emphasized throughout. The discussion focuses on the challenges facing countries whose citizens have been kidnapped by Islamic terrorist organizations and their responses to these challenges, and provides theoretical classifications of the phenomenon of terrorism in general and terrorist kidnapping in particular.
